WE’RE A TEAM

Environmental and material scientists, highly-qualified engineers, seasoned business professionals and experienced project developers – on a mission to transform the man-made carbon cycle on earth. We have successfully managed prior start-ups and developed emerging growth ventures in advanced materials, cleantech and renewable energy. Our team brings a wealth of diverse experience and necessary tools to create innovative, effective and enduring nu carbon solutions.

PATRICK FURLOTTI

Founder & Chairman

Patrick applies 23 years of combined experience in earth sciences and sustainable business development to drive solutions for human-environmental impact. The early research he conducted on nuclear fallout in French Polynesia with Mururoa e Tatou in coordination with Ifremer, French institute for ocean science, laid the foundation for his lifelong activism. He has captained research vessels with leading marine biologists to conduct groundbreaking studies monitoring ocean health. This work propelled numerous Earth Justice action cases that established new conservation policies.

Since then, Patrick has launched renewable energy startups, an engineering firm that pioneers clean technology and products, and an environmental incubator that accelerates solutions for global sustainability. With Ecomana Tahiti SARL, he directed the nation’s first commercial solar energy project, securing $22 million equivalent and distinguished partnerships with Shell Energy South Pacific to build the newly-commissioned 10 megawatt solar power plant. In the process, he successfully petitioned the government to pass legislature for the solar-electric grid intertie.

Patrick is the founder of both Projects For Good and the Global Mana Foundation, which support numerous climate workshops and innovation hubs. He produced the award-winning film, “Carbon Negative,” which features Nobel Prize-winning economist and founder of Global Thermostat, Graciela Chichilnisky, revealing the impact that direct air capture technology can make in CO2 removal and reuse. This film inspired the language used in the Trump-signed Q45 bipartisan spending bill that created tax credits for companies to remove carbon dioxide.

Nu Carbon is the culmination of Patrick’s professional paths: capturing waste CO2 from landfills and the atmosphere and transforming it into valuable products for a new carbon world.

Patrick is also a merchant marine officer with over 30,000 nautical miles of ocean navigation experience.

SURI SHERMAN

Director of the Circular Carbon Economy Initiative & Business Development

As Director of the Circular Carbon Economy Initiative at NuCarbon, Suri develops and drives solutions to our global sustainability crisis. He believes that humanity can live in harmony with the planet by creating an economy where we amplify the value of earth’s resources in circulation.

Suri formulated and constructed the world’s first bio-based, biodegradable polyurethane sandal prototype working as a team at Algenesis Materials. The materials he helped formulate and scale-up are now being sold on the market as part of the world’s first 100% biodegradable polyurethane shoes by Blueview Footwear.

In addition to his background in sustainable product development, Suri also has experience in nano material science where he used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to compare adhesion forces to surface roughness at the nano-scale. He wrote and published a first-author paper on his AFM research in a peer-reviewed journal at the age of 16, while still just in highschool.

Suri combines his love of material science and sustainable product innovation in developing new carbon solutions. Suri holds a BSc in Environmental Engineering from the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department at the University of California, San Diego.

KRIS GOURLAY

Waste Handling Systems Advisor

Kris has extensive experience in complex waste handling systems. He is a Refuse Collections Administrator for the city and county of Honolulu, where he manages Oahu’s island-wide refuse collection services, comprising 7 collection yards, 300 refuse collection vehicles, 400 personnel, and a $350M operating budget.

As CEO/President/Owner of The KNG Group LLC, he directed the third-largest waste management company in Hawaii (with 60 personnel in two operating units). As Vice President & Owner of Rolloffs Hawaii LLC, he coordinated the company’s merger with The KNG Group LLC and transitioned to being the overall manager of Hawaii’s second largest $30M a year waste collection operations. Kris was also Vice President of Hawaii Division BFI of Hawaii Inc., where he directed all business operations at six refuse and recycling facilities throughout Hawaii for this Fortune 500’s local division. He played a key role in the acquisition of the largest competitor’s Oahu hauling operation in 1998, and creating a new $50M a year entity.

Aside from directing several successful growth ventures in waste management, Kris has also implemented profitable recycling programs that helped communities resolve landfill and pollution issues while boosting economies. As General Manager of Hawaii Environmental Transfer, he oversaw operations, production, shipping and marketing of Hawaii’s largest recycling company and achieved record profitability and gross revenues for recycling operations in Hawaii. Likewise, as Director of Marketing & Business Development for Unisyn Biowaste, he developed and implemented its recycling technology marketing plan and customer & public relations program. His company representation to private, commercial, and government groups laid the groundwork for Hawaii’s first large-scale food waste recycling program.
